Caritas Bakhita House

12 December 2024

Caritas Bakhita House provides 24hr specialist support services and bespoke care all year round in a safe and confidential location, offering education opportunities and mental health guidance for women escaping human trafficking

Since being established in 2015 they have supported over 180 women to recover and rebegin their lives beyond slavery, whilst protecting them from re-victimisation by ensuring that they develop skills, rebuild their mental health, regain their dignity, and are able to earn legitimate income. Because they operate a therapeutic model approach independently of the government’s National Referral Mechanism (NRM) for victims of modern slavery, the women referred to them do not have to move on after the set time-limit that is imposed by the NRM, a time limit which does not give the women time to recover, gain new skills and build strong foundations for a better life. The longer-term support also means that they have the time to support them pursue criminal prosecutions against their captors and to date they have helped secure prison sentences for 20 traffickers totalling 189 years.

The Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation has previously made grants Bakhita House at a total value over £500,000. We are happy to awarded an additional £300,000 to support their outstanding work with victims of modern slavery for a further three years.

Although not a direct recipient of our funding, Marley, Bakhita House’s resident rescue-cat, has received great acclaim for his gift of empathy and his service de-traumatising many of Bakhita House’s residents, winning Cat of the Year at the Cat’s Protection’s National Cat Awards 2024.
